Urban wood stories

We will get this started with a starter story that was too late for our book, but just to get you rolling.

"Number 6 side pocket"

For years I have had my eyes on a burled maple on Madison Street in Madison, WI. One day I intentionally took a short detour just to check it out. Per chance, or the grace of God (depending on your beliefs), the city street crew was removing the now hollow tree with plans that it would be hauled to a vacant lot for a pending log auction. I bought the log and hauled it to my yard. As we positioned it for slabbing, a billiard ball rolled out of the cavity.
